Ventriculoperitoneal shunts to control hydrocephalus in adults

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder where there is an increased build up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. One of the most prominent ways to treat this condition is the use of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. Studies conducted are used to understand what the best treatment will be for certain patients with hydrocephalus. The overall goal of these studies is to determine how tech...

Subcutaneous catheter calcification in ventriculoperitoneal shunts.

In three male patients with long-standing Silastic ventriculoperitoneal shunts, a sleeve of dystrophic calcification surrounding the catheter at the thoracic inlet developed, visible on plain radiographs. Such calcification indicates degeneration and tethering of the shunt catheter. It was associated with shunt disconnection in two patients.

Current perspectives on intrathecal drug delivery

Advances in intrathecal analgesia and intrathecal drug delivery systems have allowed for a range of medications to be used in the control of pain and spasticity. This technique allows for reduced medication doses that can decrease the side effects typically associated with oral or parenteral drug delivery. Recent expert panel consensus guidelines have provided care paths in the treatment of noc...

Fluid Mechanics of Intrathecal Drug Delivery

The aim of this principally experimental study is to understand from fluid mechanic principles why an insignificant anesthetic dose administered as a short bolus into the cerebrospinal fluid inside the subarachnoid space provides greater pain relief than a larger dose continuously injected over a longer period. The subarachnoid space is modeled as an annular gap of constant or slowly varying cr...

Oral drug delivery utilizing intestinal OATP transporters.

Transporters play important roles in tissue distribution and urinary- and biliary-excretion of drugs and transporter molecules involved in those processes have been elucidated well. Furthermore, an involvement of efflux transporters such as P-glycoproteins, multidrug resistance associated protein 2, and breast cancer resistance protein as the intestinal absorption barrier and/or intestinal lumi...
